One of the most moving and heartwarming dramas of the year, "La Rafle" chronicles the true story of the infamous "Vel' d'Hiv'" through the eyes of the Weismann family, whose lives are upended when the Vichy police raid their neighborhood and round up more than 13,000 Jews. Detained in the Velodrome stadium under inhumane conditions, a Christian nurse-ably played by Melanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds)-- and a Jewish doctor (Jean Reno, The Professional), risk their own health and safety to tend to Jewish children suffering from thirst, hunger, and disease.
Carefully reconstructing a long-suppressed chapter of French history and based on years of research by writer/director Roselyne Bosch, "La Rafle" makes it clear that the people and stories portrayed are real, and the heroism portrayed by Jews and non-Jews is indeed commendable.
Reviews:
"Impeccable production values and all-around stirring performances..." -Variety
"The film should be evaluated for the grace and skill with which the story is presented. In that, it is an excellent package. The cinematography is superb, the music by Christian Henson is evocative, and the actors are all effective making this a highly recommended film." -Laurel Corona, San Diego Jewish World
